Quod Init Exit: Zampo is hungry and needs you
Among Commodore 64 games, titles that do not take themselves too seriously yet remain instantly memorable have always held a special place. Quod Init Exit is exactly that kind of game: a cheerful, single-screen platformer centered around Zampo, an endlessly hungry little character.
Zampo's philosophy of life is simple and unshakable: what goes in must eventually come out. The game turns this absurd, childlike humor into a full-fledged C64 experience, packed with charming graphics, situations that demand quick reactions, and energetic music.
One screen, endless hunger
The game is a single-screen platformer, meaning there is no horizontal scrolling or large map to explore. Each level takes place on a single screen, where you can clearly see the food, obstacles, and possible escape routes. This simplicity suits the game perfectly, making its objectives immediately clear.
The task seems simple: keep feeding Zampo from morning till night so he never gets truly hungry. In practice, however, you need quick decisions, good timing, and some knowledge of the levels. Behind the humorous premise lies a surprisingly tight little action game.
Crisp graphics, cheeky humor
Quod Init Exit has a distinctly friendly visual style. The characters and levels make no attempt to create a dark or serious atmosphere, instead presenting a lighthearted, cartoon-like world. Zampo's animations, the colorful environments, and the game's basic concept combine to create a peculiar charm that makes it difficult to stay angry with the game, even after messing up a level yet again.
The music also adds a great deal to the experience. The cheerful, fast-paced tunes perfectly complement Zampo's constant running and the game's comic tone. Here, the SID sound is more than mere background music: it is one of the main driving forces behind the atmosphere.
From an inside joke to a C64 game
There is a particularly charming story behind the title. Quod Init Exit was born from an elaborate inside joke among a group of friends. The Italian phrase, ''Tutto ciò che entra, esce'', roughly means: what goes in, comes out. Its Latin equivalent became Quod Init Exit, a title that manages to sound both serious and completely absurd at the same time.
The original version was created as a birthday present for the friend who came up with the joke in the first place. That personal origin can still be felt in the game: rather than a sterile product, it feels like something created with genuine enthusiasm and a sense of fun.
RGCD cartridge and sequel
Quod Init Exit v1.3 was also released on cartridge by RGCD in 2012. This was an important milestone, showing how the game had grown beyond its origins as an inside joke and become a lovable, tangible release for the wider C64 community.
The game requires PAL Commodore 64 hardware. The cartridge version requires an EasyFlash cartridge, while the disk version requires a 1541 disk drive. A joystick is optional, although for a platform game this fast-paced, it is naturally highly recommended.
And the story did not end with the first game. The sequel, Quod Init Exit IIm, offers even more food-filled adventures, further expanding Zampo's strange little world. The original, however, remains a great introduction in its own right: lighthearted, fast, funny, and unmistakably C64.
